1. Corpus Christi's Bayfront Seawall is one of the city's most iconic landmarks. Its sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, would later sculpt the iconic national landmark of Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota.
2. The USS Lexington, now a museum, was the largest Essex-class aircraft carrier during its years of service. The carrier is as tall as a 19-story building and is as long as three New York City street blocks. To put it into perspective, three separate football games could be played at the same time on the deck of the carrier. The retired carrier was also featured in the 2001 movie Pearl Harbor and also houses the F-14 Tomcat fighter aircraft that was used in the 1986 classic, Top Gun.
3. Corpus Christi was essentially destroyed by a hurricane in 1919. Storm surge 16 ft high would shatter the illusion at the time that the barrier island would protect the city from hurricane storm surge. The damage to the city was catastrophic, and the cost was estimated to be at $20 million at the time (which equates to over $375 million in today's dollars), with an unfortunately high death toll. The citizens stood tall despite the tragedy, and seven years later, the city's port was reopened. A survivor of the hurricane was Dr. Robert Simpson, who was 6 years old at the time of the hurricane. Dr. Simpson would later go on to make the study of hurricanes his life's work, and would eventually help create the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, a tool still used today to measure hurricane strength.
