1. In 1821, Spanish pioneer Rafael Rivera discovered a region of sprawling fields and grasses supplied by an abundance of local springs. Rivera named the area Las Vegas, or "the meadows" because of this picturesque view. Due to development and groundwater pumping operations, the city now gets the vast majority of its water from Lake Mead over 200 years later.
2. New York City may be the "city that never sleeps," but Las Vegas is the city that astronauts can see from orbit in the International Space Station. 30+ hotels and casinos and their vast signage lining the Las Vegas Strip help make Las Vegas the brightest spot on the planet - due in no small part to the concentrated display of lights in a single spot.
3. Las Vegas holds claim to being home to the largest hotel in the world. The MGM Grand Hotel and Casino features 6,852 rooms sprawled over 30 floors - combined with the pools, spa, sports bar, casino, and other amenities, the hotel spans 170,000 square feet. It is estimated that upwards of 70,000 people go to and from the hotel every day - including upwards of 12,000 guests who could be staying at the same time.
4. Ever heard of the ghost town of St. Thomas? In the 1930's during the construction of the Hoover Dam, the town of St. Thomas laid in the path of the Lake Mead reservoir that was to be created by the construction of the dam. While residents were compensated by the U.S. government for the loss of their property, it wasn't fully abandoned until St. Thomas' final resident, Hugh Lord, was finally forced to abandon his home, paddling away as the waters rose. Today, thanks to the water level of Lake Mead going down, ruins are being unearthed from the old town, and the site is now under the protection of the National Park Service as a historical site.
