1. Fort Wayne has very deep sports history associated with it. The very first professional baseball game in American history took place on May 4, 1871 between the Fort Wayne Kekiongas and the Cleveland Forest Citys in the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players league. The home team would win 2-0, and the site is commemorated today by a monument at Camp Allen Park.
2. Continuing with the sports theme, despite not having a pro team (currently) in the city, Fort Wayne is considered the birthplace of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Fort Wayne Pistons owner Fred Zollner in 1949 is credited with merging the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball League (NBL) and creating the NBA as it stands today. The Fort Wayne Pistons would eventually move to Detroit to become the Detroit Pistons in 1957.
3. People across the world can thank Fort Wayne native Fred W. Wolf for the ability to keep cold drinks and refrigerated food in their homes. Wolf invented the very first domestic refrigerator, the DOMELRE (which is an acronym for Domestic Electric Refrigerator) in 1913, and soon began production commercially in 1914. Despite other competing units being created shortly after, Wolf's design was the most commercially successful of the time, and revolutionized a burgeoning industry at the time.
