Facts About Odessa, TX

1. Odessa was originally founded as a water stop in 1881 along the Texas and Pacific Railway for visitors on their way to California. Named for it's counterpart city in modern Ukraine, Odessa was primarily a ranching and cattle farming town until oil was discovered in the Permian Basin in the 1920's, greatly expanding the local economy of the city.

2. Despite it size, Odessa has a number of unique landmarks and places to visit. One such is the Odessa Meteor Crater, formed from a meteor strike that occurred 60,000 years ago. The crater itself is roughly 10 acres and is one of the largest such meteor impact sites in the United States. While the crater was discovered in 1892, it's scientific significance wouldn't be determined until about 30 years later when scientists confirmed the striking meteor weighed an estimated 1,000 tons.

3. You can't have Texas without football, and arguably for Odessa, football is its biggest claim to fame. The famous book, movie, and even the TV show (albeit a bit more loosely) are based off the area's Permian Panthers football team, and its famous 1988 season. The Permian Panthers still call Odessa home, and their 19,000 seat stadium remains a cultural icon, not only in the town, but across the country.
