Facts About Columbia, SC

1. Columbia is home to Fort Jackson, a 53,000 acre U.S. Army training facility, making it the largest Entry Training Center in the country. An estimated 50% of all U.S. Army soldiers are trained at Fort Jackson, including 60% of all female enlistees. Fort Jackson was created in 1917 near the end of WWI as a training center for soldiers and has operated ever since as one of the military branch's finest facilities.

2. The Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia is one of only 10 zoos in the entire country that currently have Koalas on permanent exhibit. To ensure the koalas have the correct food source and provide for them the best natural living habitat, the zoo has eucalyptus grown in Florida flown in for them.

3. One street in Columbia, Assembly Street, is noticeably wider than any other street in town, being 150 feet wide - roughly 50 feet wider than anywhere else in the city proper. In the 1700's it was thought that mosquitoes were unable to travel more than 60 feet without perishing from starvation, and that having a wide street would keep the blood-sucking pests from wrecking havoc on the populace. Unfortunately for everyone that proved to not be correct, but it was a valiant effort to stem the menace.
